How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Really Need?

One of the most common questions dog owners ask is: "How much exercise does my dog need?" The answer isn\'t one-size-fits-all. It depends on your dog\'s age, breed, size, and individual energy level.

Puppies (8 weeks to 1 year)

Puppies have lots of energy but their bones and joints are still developing. Avoid intense exercise that could cause injury. Instead, focus on multiple short play sessions throughout the day.

A good rule of thumb: 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, twice daily. So a 3-month-old puppy needs about 15 minutes of exercise, twice a day.

Adult Dogs (1 to 7 years)

Most adult dogs need 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise daily, depending on their breed and energy level.

High-energy breeds (Border Collies, Huskies, Retrievers) need 1-2+ hours daily. Medium-energy breeds (Beagles, Cocker Spaniels) need 30-60 minutes. Low-energy breeds (Bulldogs, Basset Hounds) need 20-30 minutes.

Senior Dogs (7+ years)

Senior dogs need less intense exercise, but they still benefit from regular activity. Aim for 20-30 minutes of gentle exercise daily, adjusted for any joint or health issues.

Low-impact activities like swimming or leisurely walks are ideal for older dogs.

Signs Your Dog Isn\'t Getting Enough Exercise

  • Destructive behaviour (chewing, digging)
  • Excessive barking or whining
  • Hyperactivity or restlessness
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty focusing or training
  • Anxiety or stress-related behaviours

Signs Your Dog Is Getting Too Much Exercise

  • Excessive panting or fatigue
  • Limping or lameness
  • Reluctance to exercise
  • Joint or muscle soreness
  • Behavioural changes or irritability

Types of Exercise

Different types of exercise provide different benefits:

  • Walking: Great for all ages and fitness levels
  • Running/Jogging: Ideal for high-energy dogs
  • Fetch: Combines running with mental stimulation
  • Swimming: Low-impact, excellent for joints
  • Agility Training: Mental and physical challenge
  • Socialisation: Playtime with other dogs

Mental Exercise Matters Too

Physical exercise is important, but mental stimulation is equally crucial. Puzzle toys, training sessions, and scent work engage your dog\'s brain and can be just as tiring as physical activity.

A mentally stimulated dog is often a well-behaved, happy dog.
