Dog grooming isn\'t just about making your dog look good. It\'s an essential part of their health and wellbeing. Regular grooming prevents skin problems, keeps your dog comfortable, and helps you spot potential health issues early.

Why Grooming Matters

Regular grooming provides numerous health benefits:

  • Prevents matting and tangling
  • Reduces shedding and allergens
  • Prevents skin infections and parasites
  • Maintains healthy nails and paws
  • Promotes good ear health
  • Allows early detection of lumps or skin issues

How Often Should You Groom Your Dog?

Grooming frequency depends on your dog\'s breed and coat type:

  • Long-haired breeds: Every 6-8 weeks
  • Short-haired breeds: Every 8-12 weeks
  • Double-coated breeds: Every 8-12 weeks (more during shedding season)
  • Curly/wiry coats: Every 4-6 weeks

Bathing Your Dog

Most dogs should be bathed every 4-12 weeks, depending on their activity level and coat type. Use lukewarm water and dog-specific shampoo (human shampoo can irritate their skin).

Always rinse thoroughly to remove all shampoo residue, and dry your dog completely to prevent skin issues.

Brushing and Combing

Regular brushing prevents matting, reduces shedding, and distributes natural oils through your dog\'s coat.

  • Long-haired dogs: Brush 3-4 times per week
  • Short-haired dogs: Brush 1-2 times per week
  • Double-coated dogs: Brush 2-3 times per week (daily during shedding season)

Nail Care

Trim your dog\'s nails every 3-4 weeks, or when you hear them clicking on the floor. Long nails can cause discomfort and affect your dog\'s gait.

If you\'re unsure how to trim nails safely, ask your vet or a professional groomer.

Ear and Eye Care

Check your dog\'s ears weekly for signs of infection (redness, odour, discharge). Clean them gently with a damp cloth or ear-cleaning solution recommended by your vet.

Wipe around your dog\'s eyes with a damp cloth to remove any discharge or debris.

Dental Care

Brush your dog\'s teeth daily with dog-specific toothpaste. Regular dental care prevents tartar buildup, gum disease, and tooth loss.

Your vet may recommend professional dental cleaning if needed.
